George Washington served two terms as the first president of the United States from April 30, 1789, until December 14, 1797. Why was George Washington a great leader?
“Go ahead, Cam,” I said, encouragingly.
“I want to be student . . . um, yah, so. I uh . . .” His face was turning red and I could see his hand begin to tremble.
Freedom looked back at me with a nervous look.
Tommy sat up straight and said, “Go on, Cam, you are awesome, man.” I could tell he was worried about his friend.
The seconds ticked past, and then a minute, but Cam had still not said anything. He stood motionless at the front of the class, looking down at his playbook.
Suddenly, the classroom door swung open. I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. Elizabeth came breezing into the classroom like a windstorm, one hand on her hip.
“Oh wow, looks like Cam’s going to give a speech. Let’s hear it.” She walked over to the nearest desk and sat down. “Go ahead, Cam, don’t let me bother you.” She flicked her long blond hair to one side.
“Hello, Elizabeth, thank you for joining us. Please remain quiet while in the club meeting,” I said.
Elizabeth pursed her lips and sat up straight, looking forward. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Liberty duck away from the window.
“Were you spying on us through the door?” asked Freedom, who was sitting two desks away from Elizabeth.
Elizabeth turned in her seat and stared at Freedom, but didn’t respond.
“What’s wrong, Cam, can’t you think of anything to say?” said Elizabeth.
Cam’s eyes were open wide in shock.
Tommy glanced back at me and shrugged.
The other students started to grab their backpacks.
Freedom looked kindly at Cam, urging him to continue, but he stood frozen.
Another few seconds passed, as Cam tried to speak: “No, Elizabeth, um, I am good to be . . . president . . . uh, I’m a leader . . . um, fun . . .” Then he went silent again.
Before I could put a stop to it, Elizabeth broke the silence and said, “Well, I always have something to say.” She stood from her seat and walked to the front of the class. She was wearing skinny jeans, high-top trendy pink sneakers with glitter, and a T-shirt that read QUEEN E. The new club members watched with backpacks in hand while Cam sheepishly moved off to the side.
“If you want to be cool in school, vote for me, Elizabeth, for student body president. When I run, I’ll make it fun. You’ll see.” Her words flowed out flawlessly. She waved like she was on a tour bus and captivated the entire room. Then she slipped out of the room as quickly as she had appeared.
Almost everyone clapped.
Cam’s mouth dropped open.
Just when I thought the threat was gone, Elizabeth popped her head into the classroom again and said, “Oh, and by the way Cam, great speech. You have such a way with words.” She giggled as she bowed back out into the hall, waving at everyone like a princess.
